Where Did "10,000 Steps a Day" Actually Come From?

Open almost any phone's health app and you'll find a daily step goal already set for you, usually without asking: 10,000. It's treated as settled science, the walking equivalent of eight glasses of water a day. It isn't. The number has a specific birthday, a specific inventor, and a specific reason it landed on 10,000 rather than 8,000 or 12,000 — and none of it involves a clinical trial.

The story starts in Japan, right after the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The Games had put a national spotlight on fitness, and a researcher named Dr. Yoshiro Hatano, at the Kyushu University of Health and Welfare, was looking at a different problem entirely: rising rates of obesity in a population that had grown more sedentary. Hatano's team estimated that the average Japanese adult was walking somewhere between 3,000 and 5,000 steps a day. If that number could be pushed to 10,000, they calculated, it would burn roughly an extra 300 to 400 calories daily — a meaningful nudge against weight gain.

That calculation became the basis for a product. In 1965, the Yamasa Clock company released a pedometer called the Manpo-kei — literally, "10,000 steps meter." The name did double duty: it was a health target and a product label in the same three syllables. It didn't hurt that the Japanese character for 10,000 (万) visually resembles a walking figure, which made for tidy branding on the packaging.

The key fact: when the Manpo-kei launched, no study had ever compared health outcomes across different daily step counts. The number was a marketing decision with a rough back-of-envelope calorie estimate behind it — not a finding.

That distinction matters because of what happened next: the number didn't stay in Japan, and it didn't stay attached to its origin story. Walking clubs formed around the Manpo-kei target. Decades later, when pedometers gave way to smartphones and wearables, engineers needed a default daily goal to ship with the product — and 10,000 was already sitting there, familiar and round, with sixty years of informal cultural momentum behind it. Fitbit, Apple Health, and nearly every fitness app that followed simply inherited the number, and in doing so, re-issued it as though it now carried the weight of medical consensus.

It took until 2019 for real epidemiological research to catch up and ask the obvious question: does 10,000 actually matter more than, say, 7,000? A study led by Harvard epidemiologist I-Min Lee, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, tracked over 16,000 older women and found that mortality risk dropped significantly at around 4,400 steps a day compared to 2,700 — and that the benefit curve flattened out at roughly 7,500 steps, with little additional gain from pushing further to 10,000. A separate 2023 analysis in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, pooling data across more than 226,000 people from several countries, landed on a similar story: meaningful reductions in mortality risk started appearing around 4,000 steps a day.

None of this means 10,000 is a bad target — for a lot of people it's a genuinely useful, motivating round number, and there's no evidence that walking more than 7,500 steps is somehow harmful. What the research does undercut is the idea that 10,000 is a scientifically derived threshold you're failing to meet if you land at 8,200. It's a sixty-year-old marketing slogan from a Japanese clockmaker, inherited by an entire industry because it was catchy, memorable, and already sitting there when someone needed a default number. The walking is what matters. The specific digit was never the point.
